Canadian activists opposed to the inclusion and equal protection of transgender persons were vocal when 10 provinces, two territories, and our federal government added the explicit prohibition from discrimination on the grounds of gender identity or expression to Canada's human rights laws.
Despite an unequivocal failure to oppress Trans people at home, a number have moved on to organize against inclusion overseas. Some are going as far as using disinformation campaigns to create fear and outrage as they push to deny Trans persons in the UK and other countries the very protections enacted in Canada.
Jon Nim Ralph and Morgane Oger on Wednesday, November 6 at 7:30 PM for a conversation on the spread of anti-Trans antagonism from UK and Canadian Trans perspectives, and what to do about it - moderated by Professor Dr. Jen Marchbank.
A 30-minute Question & Answer session will follow the conversation.
This event is hosted by the Morgane Oger Foundation and the SFU Department of Gender, Sexuality, and Women’s Studies.
This free event is being held on the traditional territories of the Musqueam, the Squamish and the Tsleil-Waututh First Nations. The organizers of this event recognize that these territories were never ceded through treaty, war or surrender.

Morgane Oger
Human rights organizer. Founder, Morgane Oger Foundation.
Morgane Oger is a Canadian Transgender and human rights advocate. Her work focuses on inclusion and public policy. Working through the foundation she founded to continue her activism work, Oger strives to narrow the gap between Canada’s human rights laws and the reality faced by Canadians impacted by discrimination. Morgane Oger has served on the City of Vancouver LGBTQ2+ Advisory Committee and has been elected Chair of the Trans Alliance Society, the Vancouver District Parent Advisory Committee, the Law Union of British Columbia, and vice-president of tne BC New Democratic Party.
A 2017 complaint with the BC Human RIghts Trubunal she resulted in a precedent-setting 2019 ruling that a poster campaign advertising someone’s intention to discriminate against her on explicitly-prohibited grounds and urging others to do the same was discrimination on prohibited grounds because the Charter of Rights and Freedom’s protection of free expression and beliefs do not include impinging on another person’s right to live free of prohibited discrimination.
