BC 2026 General Election: A new government responsible to everyone

The Morgane Oger Foundation congratulates the Conservative Party of BC and its interim leader, premier-designate Lorne Doerkson, on their recent election victory. We recognize the responsibility British Columbians have entrusted to them and wish the incoming government success in serving our province.

The Morgane Oger Foundation works to help close the gap between the rights Canada’s laws promise and the justice people experience. That mission continues through every change of government. We welcome constructive engagement with elected representatives committed to safety, dignity, fairness and accountable public institutions.

A new government, a responsibility to everyone

Upholding human rights and protecting the wellbeing of all British Columbians.

We hope this new BC government will strengthen economic opportunity, improve access to housing and healthcare, and deliver public services effectively. Sound management and compassion belong together. Everyone deserves opportunities to thrive and to access the support they need to do so.

The Morgane Oger Foundation must also acknowledge the discriminatory and divisive statements that circulated before and during this election. Whatever their source, published statements that demean people or question their equal belonging undermine public trust. Governing brings a responsibility to represent all British Columbians and meet their needs as fully as feasible.

We encourage the incoming cabinet never to forget that its choices can have sweeping consequences for people’s wellbeing and resilience. A funding decision, a change in school policy, or a minister’s words can shape whether someone receives quality care, feels safe or trusts public institutions. Ministers are urged to consider these consequences, especially for people least able to withstand harm.

Transgender and non-binary British Columbians, their families, and their loved ones need reassurance through action: protection against discrimination, evidence-based healthcare, and safe, inclusive schools everywhere in our Province.

The Morgane Oger Foundation’s longstanding calls for meaningful inclusion of queer youth and enforceable protections against discrimination in publicly funded services remain priorities. We urge respectful partnerships with Indigenous peoples and continued reconciliation. We ask ministers to challenge racism, antisemitism, Islamophobia, sexism and discrimination against women, homophobia, transphobia and all other forms of hatred or discrimination explicitly prohibited by British Columbia’s Human Rights Code and the Criminal Code of Canada, and to listen directly to affected communities.

We encourage cabinet to consider human rights from the outset of every decision. Preventing discrimination protects people from harm and avoids the expense, delay and damaged public trust that can accompany litigation.

The Morgane Oger Foundation offer practical advice, constructive engagement and principled scrutiny. We wish the incoming government wisdom and success in building a province where everyone belongs.
